Swan Island Dahlias, Year 8

Posted on

In some ways it feels like we just moved to Portland, but then I remember we’ve been going to the Swan Island Dahlia farm in late August / early Sept for 8 years now. Time is both so dang slow and crazy fast. It’s fun that this was already Tennyson’s 4th year going to the Dahlia farm and Murphy’s 2nd! Last year Murphy was only 7 weeks old and now she is 14 months old.

Even if we end up living elsewhere, we will still come back to this farm every year. 💛

Getting a picture where both kids are looking in the same direction is hard enough so I’ve given up on trying to get everyone smiling.

We went to the dahlia farm twice this year. The first time was when Jojo was in town. The sun was way too bright for pictures and Tenny picked the one and only face paint option that wasn’t a single object but a full face covering 🙈 But we’re glad we went twice because we (mostly me) love this place, and the farm has turned their dahlia season into an ongoing festival with vendors, food trucks, and activities every day.

For the first time ever, we stopped at a place called Flower Farm that’s about .5 mile away from Swan Island. Apparently we’ve been missing out all these years! We promised Tenny we would ride a train that day and had planned to drive 30 min away to a train park but then we realized this nearby farm had a train so we stopped to check it out.

Not only do they have a fun train to ride, but they have animals to feed (goats, ducks, chickens, rabbits, etc), treats, a flower field, and an assortment of toys and fresh produce in the store. Our favorite farms around here are all turning into crowd pleasers (which means more fun things to do but also more cost and more crowds) so it was nice to run around a quiet, still kinda quirky farm. We had the entire train ride and animal tour to ourselves on a Saturday!
