U-Pick Sunflowers

Posted on

We had family in town for 2.5 weeks after Murphy was born. This sunflower outing was not only our first outing as a family of 4, but it was our 2nd day alone as a family of 4. All of us, except maybe Tennyson, were very tired so this short adventure to the farm was all the excitement we could do for the day.

Although individual sunflower blooms only last a couple weeks, each variety of sunflower blooms at a different time during summer so you can find fields of magnificent sunflowers all the way from July to October. At least you can here in Oregon 🙂 A lot of the farms around here are tapping into their festival / tourism potential so there are no more free sunflower fields. If you know of one that is still free please let me know!

Kids ages: Tennyson (2 years & almost 1 month), Murphy (almost 3 weeks)

I bought these matching pants for the kids almost 6 months ago. The biggest size they had was 24 months. At the time I bought them, I figured Tenny would be around this size just after he turned two (when Murphy would be born) but he’s actually a solid 3T in pants now (4T in pajamas) so his pants are too short, too tight, and generally ill-fitting… but I had to put him in them at least once!

Instead of paying the $25 or $30 per person (😳 what?!) that the big farms charge, we went to the Red Berry Barn and paid $8/person. For 8 bucks, each person gets to visit the sunflower field and cut 1 sunflower to take home. It’s still more than I wanted to pay but it’s cheaper than going to the movies and you get both fresh flowers for the house and fun family photos. 😊 Also, they have a big play

This particular Saturday was the only day in July the weather called for cloudy skies so I thought it would be a great chance to be outside without sweating and the kids could wear their matching jean joggers. 😊 Jokes on me… It ended up being 90 degrees and the thick clouds cleared as soon as we parked the car. Tenny’s red cheeks are proof we were all uncomfortably hot.

It turns out everything is a little bit harder with an additional child around, especially taking group pictures. Luckily our newest family member often comes in a carseat which works as a handy, portable tripod base. We’re using the same infant carseat we bought before Tennyson was born. I’m so glad we opted to spend more for the lighter weight carseat. It’s only a few pounds lighter than the typical infant carseat but it feels much easier to carry.

Nice long rows for Tenny to run down 😊
